Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through a mechanical design you took from concept to production.

What they are checking: Whether they have owned a full product cycle including manufacturing and verification, not just early design.

Tell me about a time you worked through a conflict between mechanical needs and electrical or software needs.

What they are checking: Whether they can solve tradeoffs across disciplines, which this role requires daily.

Why does designing for newborn care appeal to you?

What they are checking: Whether they connect with the clinical purpose, which shapes how careful they are with every decision.

What would you do

Testing shows a design will not meet a thermal requirement late in the program. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they raise the issue early with options instead of hiding it or forcing a weak fix.

How would you mentor a junior mechanical engineer on this team?

What they are checking: Whether they can lead and grow others, since this is a senior or lead role.

About the work

How would you approach the thermal design of an incubator that has to hold a newborn's environment within a tight temperature range?

What they are checking: Whether they can reason about heat transfer, airflow and control together for a device where small errors matter.

How do you design a product to survive years of hard use and cleaning in a hospital?

What they are checking: Whether they consider fatigue, cleaning chemicals and real wear in their design choices.

How do human factors shape your design for something nurses use many times a shift?

What they are checking: Whether they put caregiver workflow and use errors at the center of mechanical decisions.

What role do tolerance analysis and design for manufacturing play in your work?

What they are checking: Whether they design parts that can be built consistently at scale.

How do medical device design controls and risk management change how you work?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that documentation and verification are part of the design, not after it.
