About your past

Tell me about a time you overhauled an underperforming hardware product line.

What they are checking: Whether they can diagnose weak designs and drive real improvement.

Tell me about a hard vendor negotiation you led. What did you get and what did you give up?

What they are checking: Whether they can negotiate effectively and know where to trade.

What would you do

An ODM partner is about to miss a delivery milestone. How do you hold them accountable?

What they are checking: Whether they negotiate firmly with vendors and protect the schedule without burning the relationship.

How do you decide when to retire a legacy hardware line?

What they are checking: Whether they weigh support cost, risk and user needs to make clear lifecycle decisions.

About the work

How would you gather requirements from a trading team for a new server design?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn trading needs like latency and density into concrete hardware specs.

Walk me through how you would route direct liquid cooling through a high-power server chassis.

What they are checking: Whether they understand thermal design and fluid flow at a practical engineering level.

How would you use finite element analysis in designing a chassis or cooling solution?

What they are checking: Whether they have real mechanical analysis skills, as the posting expects.

Explain how PCIe topology choices in a server could affect application performance.

What they are checking: Whether they can connect the hardware layer to the OS and application layers.

How would you set up lab tests to validate a new board design before it goes to production?

What they are checking: Whether they know measurement and instrumentation well enough to catch issues early.

How would you connect a rack design to the limits of the datacenter it goes into?

Hudson River Trading (HRT) is seeking a Senior Hardware Product Manager to design and engineer the hardware product lines across our global trading environment. The ideal candidate is a well-rounded engineer – someone who knows finite element analysis, thermodynamics, measurement and instrumentation, manages projects, negotiates fiercely with vendors, and still geeks out over the best way to route DLC piping through a chassis. If you get a thrill from driving projects with diverse requirements to achieve an elegant hardware design, this role is for you. Responsibilities • Product Line Engineering: Gather requirements directly from trading teams, drive system designs, overhaul underperforming components and designs, and retire legacy lines. You understand board, server, and rack design, and can connect that to the datacenter. You are equally comfortable prototyping and lab-testing product lines and delivering them to production. • Strategic Sourcing & Negotiation: Manage relationships with ODM and JDM partners and hold them accountable to delivery milestones through the full lifecycle of board and server designs. • Engineering Partnership: Bridge between requirements and deliverables. You must speak the hardware layer's language (PCIe topology, air and coolant flows, voltage and signal integrity) and be able to connect that to the network, OS, and application layers. Qualifications • Experience: 10+ years in hardware product engineering or product management, with mechanical or electrical engineering experience (PE/FE) strongly preferred. Experience working with ODM and JDM vendors is strongly preferred. • Technical Fluency: Deep understanding of the mechanical and electrical design of a production rackmount server. Direct experience with DLC systems is strongly preferred. You can confidently go toe-to-toe with a vendor's engineering team during a design review. • Systems Savvy: Strong understanding of a production rack, from network and hardware through power and cooling dynamics. You know the laws of thermodynamics and how they apply to a datacenter setting. You get excited about CAD designs and data visualizations. • Industry Standards: Familiarity with Open Compute Project, MGX, heat rejection and voltage rack standards. PCIe, Redfish, OpenBMC knowledge is desirable. Linux server experience is desirable. • Commercial Acumen: You can manage BOMs, RFQs, and RFPs. You're comfortable being the point of contact with hardware vendors. • Maker Mindset: Highly autonomous, with a "roll-up-your-sleeves" mentality. You have a passion for engineering excellence and data-driven design. • Long-Term Growth: You are a hands-on leader who can execute independently today while scaling to lead a team tomorrow. • Global Perspective: Ability to travel, build on-the-ground vendor relationships, and navigate regional market nuances. The estimated base salary range for this position is 200,000 to 300,000 USD per year (or local equivalent). The base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This role will also be eligible for discretionary performance-based bonuses and a competitive benefits package.
