Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a timing closure problem you solved.

What they are checking: Whether they have worked through real timing failures and know practical fixes.

Your experience is stronger on either board design or FPGA work. Which is it, and how would you grow the other?

What they are checking: Whether they know their own strengths honestly and have a plan for the adjacent skills.

Tell me about a time you helped shape the architecture of a system.

What they are checking: Whether they can influence architecture, which the posting offers to strong candidates.

What would you do

A board comes back and the FPGA will not configure. How do you start?

What they are checking: Whether they have a methodical bring-up approach covering power, clocks and configuration.

How would you mentor a newer engineer on FPGA design practices?

What they are checking: Whether they can teach good habits and review work in a way that builds skill.

About the work

Walk me through how you would design an FPGA-based data acquisition path for high-speed data coming off an MRI subsystem.

What they are checking: Whether they can think about interfaces, buffering and timing across board and logic together.

How do you handle clock domain crossings in VHDL or Verilog?

What they are checking: Whether they know the safe patterns for crossing clocks, a common source of hard-to-find bugs.

How do you verify RTL before it ever goes on hardware?

What they are checking: Whether they use simulation and test benches seriously instead of debugging only on the board.

What do you look for when laying out a board with high-speed digital interfaces?

What they are checking: Whether they understand signal integrity, impedance and return paths at the board level.

How does working on a regulated medical device change how you manage hardware and FPGA design changes?

What they are checking: Whether they understand design controls and the need to document and verify changes.

Job Description Summary Join GE HealthCare and help develop the digital electronics behind next-generation Magnetic Resonance imaging systems. As a Senior FPGA & Digital Hardware Engineer on our Digital Controls & Mixed Signal Engineering team, you will design circuit boards and FPGA-based systems for high-performance data acquisition, control, processing, and communications. We are seeking a hands-on engineer who enjoys working across board-level digital hardware and programmable logic. Your experience may be stronger in board design or FPGA development. You do not need to be a full-time RTL designer or have experience with every technology listed. Depending on your experience and interests, this role also offers opportunities to lead technical projects, mentor engineers, influence architecture, and improve engineering practices. GE Healthcare is a leading global medical technology and digital solutions innovator. Our mission is to improve lives in the moments that matter. Unlock your ambition, turn ideas into world-changing realities, and join an organization where every voice makes a difference, and every difference builds a healthier world. Job Description Essential Responsibilities • Design and verify digital circuit boards and FPGA-based subsystems for advanced MRI platforms. • Develop and modify RTL using VHDL or Verilog and support designs through simulation, synthesis, timing closure, and hardware validation. • Design boards integrating FPGAs, processors, memory, data converters, power supplies, clocks, and communication interfaces. • Perform component selection, schematic development, design reviews, board bring-up, laboratory testing, debugging, and system integration. • Define and validate interfaces among FPGA, hardware, firmware, software, ASIC, and system components. • Debug FPGA, board-level, and system issues using simulation, embedded debug tools, and laboratory equipment. • Support signal integrity, power integrity, layout, EMC, reliability, and manufacturability reviews. • Share technical knowledge through design reviews, documentation, collaborative problem solving, and mentoring. Required Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field. • Five or more years of experience developing digital hardware, FPGA designs, or a combination of both. • Experience using VHDL or Verilog for FPGA design, modification, integration, or debugging. • Experience with schematic development, component selection, board bring-up, laboratory testing, and troubleshooting. • Understanding of synchronous digital design, clocking, resets, metastability, clock-domain crossing, constraints, and timing analysis. • Experience integrating FPGAs or programmable devices with processors, memory, data converters, or communication interfaces. • Experience with one or more interfaces such as Ethernet, PCIe, DDR, LVDS, JESD204, SPI, I²C, UART, CAN, or comparable technologies. Preferred Qualifications • Experience mentoring engineers through design reviews, collaborative debugging, or hands-on technical work. • Experience with high-speed digital interfaces, memory, data converters, signal integrity, power integrity, or multi-gigabit transceivers. • Experience with automated FPGA builds, simulation, continuous integration, or hardware testing. • Experience developing products in medical devices, aerospace, defense, telecommunications, industrial controls, automotive, scientific instrumentation, test and measurement, or similar industries. Work Model This hybrid position requires a minimum of three days per week on site in Waukesha. On-site work supports board bring-up, laboratory debugging, hardware validation, system integration, and collaboration with engineering partners. Note to Applicants We welcome engineers whose experience is stronger in board-level digital hardware, FPGA development, or a combination of the two. You do not need experience with every FPGA family, interface, or development activity listed. We value strong engineering fundamentals, technical curiosity, sound judgment, and an honest description of what you have personally designed, integrated, tested, or debugged. We expect all employees to live and breathe our behaviors: to act with humility and build trust; lead with transparency; deliver with focus, and drive ownership –always with unyielding integrity. Our total rewards are designed to unlock your ambition by giving you the boost and flexibility you need to turn your ideas into world-changing realities.
