Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you declined or restructured a deal that a senior business leader badly wanted. How did that conversation go?
What they are checking: Whether they can hold a second line position under pressure while keeping the relationship with the business intact.
Describe a credit you approved that later deteriorated. What did you miss, and what did you change afterward?

How do you give effective challenge to a first line credit write-up without slowing the business down to a crawl?
What they are checking: Whether they can be rigorous and timely at once, which decides how much the business trusts the second line.
What would you do
An asset manager client wants a larger trading line, and their fund has had heavy redemptions this quarter. How do you think about it?
What they are checking: Whether they connect liquidity stress at the client to exposure risk at the bank and size the line accordingly.
What emerging risks in the financial institutions sector are you watching right now, and how would they change your approvals?
What they are checking: Whether they follow the market closely enough to adjust credit appetite before problems show up in the numbers.
How do you keep your credit decisions consistent with the bank's risk appetite when individual deals each look reasonable on their own?
What they are checking: Whether they think about concentration and portfolio limits, not just whether each single transaction can be defended.
A complex transaction structure lands on your desk that you have not seen before. How do you get comfortable enough to make a call?
What they are checking: Whether they break down unfamiliar structures methodically and know when to pull in legal, market risk or product experts.
About the work
Walk me through how you would adjudicate a new credit request for a mid-sized broker-dealer. What do you look at first, and what would make you decline?
What they are checking: Whether they have a real framework for financial institution credit rather than a corporate lending checklist borrowed from another sector.
How is assessing a bank as a counterparty different from assessing an industrial company?
What they are checking: Whether they understand that capital, liquidity, funding and regulation drive bank credit, not EBITDA and leverage multiples.
How do you measure counterparty credit risk on a derivatives or securities financing exposure, as opposed to a funded loan?
What they are checking: Whether they understand potential future exposure, netting, collateral and wrong-way risk on trading-product lines.
What collateral and risk mitigants do you trust most with financial institution counterparties, and which ones do you think get overvalued?
What they are checking: Whether they have practical judgment on margin terms, haircuts, and the limits of guarantees and parental support.
