Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a packaging project you owned end to end, from concept selection through design freeze. What was your role at each stage and where did you have to push back on a stakeholder?

whether the candidate has genuinely led a full packaging development lifecycle versus supported pieces of one

Describe a situation where you had to convert a consumer insight or ethnography finding into a concrete quality target or spec.

ability to translate soft human-factors input into measurable engineering requirements

Tell me about a time you had to present a technical risk or recommendation to people who weren't engineers. How did you make it land?

storytelling ability and comfort influencing non-technical stakeholders, which the posting calls out directly

What experience do you have managing an external vendor or consultant on a packaging project where their timeline or quality started to slip?

whether they can actually direct outside resources, not just collaborate with internal teammates

Describe a time you mentored or trained a more junior engineer. What did you focus on and how did you know it worked?

readiness for the coaching and capability-building part of this senior associate role

Technical

Tell me about a time you ran a DFMEA or FMEA on a package or component. What risk did it surface that wasn't obvious at the start, and what did you do about it?

depth of hands-on experience with structured risk assessment tools, not just familiarity with the acronym

How would you set up a distribution or drop test protocol for a new liquid dispensing system going into e-commerce channels versus club store channels?

working knowledge of ISTA and Amazon compliance testing and whether they tailor validation to channel, not just apply one standard everywhere

What DOT regulations or transport requirements have you had to design around for a package containing a hazardous or regulated material?

real exposure to dangerous goods packaging compliance versus general regulatory awareness

How have you used or set up PLM data, BOMs, or specs on past projects? Have you worked with any simulation or digital twin tools for things like drop testing or aerosol performance?

digital fluency and whether the digitization responsibilities in this role are a stretch or a strength

Situational

Say you're qualifying a new aerosol package for a global launch and a supplier flags a compatibility issue with the propellant three weeks before line trials. What do you do?

how they triage a late-stage technical risk under launch pressure and who they pull in

Imagine you're managing a packaging initiative with partners in three different time zones and the project is falling behind because decisions keep waiting on one region's sign-off. How do you fix that?

practical approach to global collaboration and decision governance, not just willingness to have early or late calls

Tell me about a time you had to choose between a cheaper material and a more sustainable one, or balance cost transformation against an LCA or PCR content target. How did you decide?

ability to navigate the tension between design-to-value cost pressure and sustainability commitments

If you inherited a packaging design standard or playbook that engineers across regions weren't actually using, how would you figure out why and get adoption up?

pragmatic thinking about harmonization and standards work beyond just writing documentation
