Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Why do you want to provide mental health support inside a school instead of in a clinic or office?

What they are checking: Whether they understand the school setting, its schedule and its people, and genuinely want to work there.

Tell me about a time you helped a young person work toward a goal that took weeks or months.

What they are checking: Patience and follow-through with goal-oriented services when progress is slow and uneven.

Tell me about a time you coordinated with another provider or agency to get someone what they needed.

What they are checking: Ability to work with outside providers and connect students to resources instead of trying to do everything alone.

How do you take care of yourself when you are supporting kids through hard situations day after day?

What they are checking: Self-awareness about burnout, which predicts whether they will last in a demanding direct-service role.

What would you do

A teacher pulls you aside and says a student on your caseload is falling apart in class and needs to be removed today. How do you respond?

What they are checking: Balancing the teacher's urgent request with the student's treatment plan and the limits of the support role.

You will manage a caseload across schools in McDonough County and nearby districts. How would you organize your week so no student falls through the cracks?

What they are checking: Practical planning across multiple buildings and rural travel while keeping contact with every student on the caseload.

A parent is angry that their child is seeing you and says they never really agreed to it. What do you do?

What they are checking: Respect for consent and family partnership, and staying calm while getting a supervisor involved appropriately.

During a session a student tells you something that makes you worried about their safety at home. Walk me through your next steps.

What they are checking: Knowledge of mandated reporting and when to involve a supervisor, rather than handling a safety risk alone.

About the work

How would you explain what a strengths-based approach looks like with a student who keeps getting in trouble?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn a buzzword into real practice that builds on what a struggling student already does well.

What would you document after a session with a student, and why does that note matter?

What they are checking: Understanding that clinical notes tie services to the treatment plan and support billing, care coordination and accountability.

How do you keep student confidentiality while still working closely with teachers and school staff?

What they are checking: Knowing what can and cannot be shared with school staff, which protects trust with both the student and the school.
