Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

How would you explain to a 10-year-old, and separately to their parents, why they need to avoid certain activities after getting an ICD?

ability to adapt patient education across developmental stages, which the posting explicitly calls out as a requirement

Tell me about a time you had to teach a skill or protocol to nursing staff who didn't have your level of specialty knowledge. How did you figure out what they actually needed to learn?

whether they can run a needs assessment and build training rather than just lecturing from what they know

Describe a situation where you had to push back on or revise an existing department policy or protocol. What made you think it needed to change, and how did you get it adopted?

whether they can drive protocol development, not just follow it, since the role expects them to recommend and revise policy

Tell me about a time a physician disagreed with your recommendation on a device or a follow-up plan. How did you handle that conversation?

whether they can hold their ground as a clinical consultant to physicians without damaging the working relationship

Tell me about a mistake or near-miss you were involved in or witnessed with a cardiac device patient. What happened and what changed afterward?

honesty about safety events and whether they engage with reporting and improvement processes rather than covering for themselves or others

How do you keep yourself current on new pacemaker and ICD technology, given how fast the devices change?

whether continuing education is a genuine habit versus something they'll claim to prioritize once hired

Technical

Tell me about your experience with pediatric electrophysiology or pacemaker and ICD care specifically. What kinds of devices and age groups have you worked with?

whether the candidate's actual hands-on device experience matches the specialized clinical demands of this role, since it's preferred but not guaranteed by general pediatric cardiology background

What's your experience with the PACE ART database, or similar clinical registries? How comfortable are you entering data, generating reports, and using that data for performance improvement?

real familiarity with structured data entry and reporting tools versus general comfort with computers

What's your understanding of the regulatory and accreditation standards that apply to pacemaker and ICD care, things like IDPH or OSHA requirements? How have you made sure your practice stayed compliant?

actual working knowledge of the compliance framework versus vague awareness that rules exist

Situational

Walk me through how you'd handle a device advisory that affects a pediatric patient's pacemaker. What do you tell the family, and what does the follow-up plan look like?

whether the candidate can translate a technical safety alert into clear, age-appropriate family communication while managing the clinical follow-through

A child comes in for a pacemaker check and the telephonic transmission data doesn't match what you're seeing in the clinic. What do you do?

clinical judgment under ambiguity and whether they know when to escalate versus troubleshoot independently

You're the only pacemaker specialist covering several patients at once, and two urgent situations come up at the same time. How do you decide what happens first?

prioritization and independent judgment under the stress the posting explicitly names
