About your past

This is a night float role at Javon Bea Hospital. Which units have you worked on, and where would you need more orientation?

What they are checking: Whether they are honest about competency gaps instead of accepting any assignment to look flexible.

Tell me about a time you had to speak up about an assignment you felt was unsafe.

What they are checking: Whether they advocate for safe staffing through the charge nurse rather than silently struggling.

What strategies do you use to stay sharp and safe working nights?

What they are checking: Whether they manage sleep and fatigue so their judgment holds up through the whole shift.

How do you build quick rapport with staff on units you only visit occasionally?

What they are checking: Whether they become someone units want back, which matters a lot in a float role.

What would you do

You float to a unit at 7 p.m. and have five patients you've never met. How do you organize your night?

What they are checking: Whether they can build a plan quickly around unstable patients and timed meds on an unfamiliar unit.

At 2 a.m. a post-op patient's heart rate climbs and their blood pressure falls. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize possible bleeding or sepsis and call a rapid response without waiting.

How do you handle being moved between units partway through a night?

What they are checking: Whether they can give a clean handoff and reset quickly without resentment.

About the work

How do you keep medication administration safe on a unit where you don't know the routines?

What they are checking: Whether they rely on scanning and verification and look up unfamiliar meds before giving them.

Walk me through how you assess a confused elderly patient who was alert on the day shift.

What they are checking: Whether they look for delirium causes like infection, meds, hypoxia or low glucose instead of assuming sundowning.

How do you give a morning handoff that sets the day nurse up well?

What they are checking: Whether their reports are structured, complete and flag what the day team needs to act on.
