Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
This role leads a team of 8 to 20, including three or four managers. Tell me about the largest team you've run and how you split the work with your other leaders.
What they are checking: Whether they lead through their managers or try to do every job themselves, which burns out fast in a store this size.
Tell me about a time you hired someone who turned out to be a great fit. What did you see in the interview that told you?
What they are checking: Whether they recruit on purpose for service and attitude, since building the team is a big part of this job.
Tell me about an associate who wasn't meeting expectations. How did you handle it, and how did it end?
What they are checking: Whether they give clear feedback and follow through, rather than avoiding the hard conversation until it becomes a firing.
Tell me about one of your assistant or key leaders you developed into a bigger role. What did you do to get them there?
What they are checking: Whether they build future leaders, because a store manager is judged partly by who they grow and promote.
What would you do
Walk me through how you'd start a day in your store when you open and see yesterday's sales came in well under goal.
What they are checking: Whether they turn a sales number into specific actions on the floor instead of just telling the team to sell more.
Our promise is service with style. What does that look like when a customer walks into the fitting room area on a busy Saturday?
What they are checking: Whether they can describe the customer experience in concrete behaviors they could coach, not just friendly words.
We carry sizes 0 to 24. How do you make sure every woman who walks in feels welcome and gets real help finding something that fits?
What they are checking: Whether they understand inclusive sizing as a service skill and can train associates to handle fit conversations with care.
A new floor set comes in and your visual standards are due by Thursday, but you're short two people this week. How do you get it done?
What they are checking: Whether they can plan and delegate a big task under pressure without letting service on the floor fall apart.
A customer is upset because a return is outside policy and she's raising her voice at the register. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they stay calm, protect the relationship and model for associates how to handle a tense moment with grace.
What would you do in your first 30 days running your store?
What they are checking: Whether they listen and learn the team, the numbers and the community before making changes, and then act with a plan.
About the work
Which store numbers do you look at every week, and what does each one tell you about what's happening on the floor?
What they are checking: Whether they read conversion, average sale and units per transaction as clues to coach from, not just a scoreboard.
How do you build a weekly schedule when payroll hours are tight but you still need coverage for your busiest hours?
What they are checking: Whether they can match labor to traffic and protect the customer experience without blowing the payroll budget.
