Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to switch between very different patient populations or acuity levels in the same day.

real evidence of flexibility across care settings, since this is a float role covering four different hospitals

Tell me about a time a piece of equipment failed or acted strangely during patient care. What did you do in the moment and afterward?

troubleshooting skill and follow-through on reporting for repair versus just working around the problem

Describe a time you had to hand off a complex patient to another therapist or shift. What did you make sure to include?

quality and completeness of handoff communication, which matters more when staff rotate across sites

Tell me about a near-miss or safety concern you caught before it became a problem.

genuine engagement with safety culture rather than a rehearsed answer

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a coworker or physician on patient care and how you resolved it.

conflict resolution skill in a role that requires working with unfamiliar teams constantly

What draws you to a float position instead of a fixed unit, and how do you keep yourself sharp across so many different environments?

genuine motivation for the float role versus using it as a stopgap, and self-directed learning habits

Technical

How do you interpret a blood gas result alongside electrolytes and hemodynamic values to decide your next move with a patient?

depth of core respiratory assessment knowledge, not just textbook recall

How would you teach a newly diagnosed COPD patient to use their inhaler and manage their disease day to day?

ability to translate clinical knowledge into patient education that actually sticks

Situational

Walk me through how you'd approach your first shift at a hospital you've never worked in before, where the vent models and unit layout are new to you.

whether the candidate has a concrete method for getting oriented fast rather than just saying they'll 'adapt'

A physician orders a ventilator setting change that doesn't match what the ABG and chest film are telling you. What do you do?

clinical judgment and willingness to advocate for the patient through proper channels rather than just following orders

You're covering a unit you don't normally work and you're not sure where a specific supply or protocol document is kept. How do you handle that without slowing down patient care?

resourcefulness and comfort asking for help quickly in an unfamiliar environment

If you noticed a new orientee or student doing something unsafe with a patient on a vent, how would you correct it in the moment?

how they balance teaching responsibility with immediate patient safety

What's your process for prioritizing when you get called to three different units at once, each with a patient who needs respiratory support?

triage skill and composure under competing demands, which is central to a resource team role
