Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you floated to a unit you weren't very familiar with. How did you get up to speed fast enough to be useful and safe?

whether the candidate can orient quickly and knows how to ask for help without slowing the unit down

Give me an example of a time you had to build trust with a care team fast, on a unit where you were the outsider for the shift.

interpersonal skill and comfort being the newest, least-established person in the room every shift

Tell me about a time your assignment changed midway through a shift, maybe you got pulled to a different floor. How did you handle the handoff and keep patients safe during the transition?

adaptability and discipline around handoff communication under disruption

How do you keep your skills sharp across different specialties when you're not on any one unit long enough to build deep routine?

self-directed learning habits and ownership of competency maintenance

You mentioned interest in cross-training into a specialty like ICU, ER, or Women's Health. What draws you to float pool work specifically, rather than a permanent unit assignment?

genuine motivation for the float role versus using it as a stopgap

Describe a time you disagreed with another nurse or a physician about a patient's care plan. How did you handle it, especially as someone who may not have worked with them before?

conflict resolution skills in situations with less established rapport

Technical

What's your experience level with common med/surg equipment and workflows, things like PCA pumps, wound vacs, telemetry monitoring, or EMR systems like Epic?

baseline clinical and technical competency across the range of units they'd float to

Tell me about your acute care experience so far. How many years, what settings, and what kinds of patients have you cared for?

whether the candidate meets the minimum acute care experience bar and the depth behind it

Situational

Walk me into a typical night shift here. You show up and get assigned to a med/surg unit you haven't worked in a few weeks. What are the first things you do before you touch a patient?

whether they have a real process for safety checks and chart review when unfamiliar with a unit's routines

You're floated to a unit and the charge nurse hands you an assignment that includes a patient population you're not confident with, like a fresh post-op or a telemetry patient. What do you do?

whether they escalate scope-of-practice concerns instead of quietly struggling

It's 2 AM, you're on a unit you rarely work, and a patient starts to deteriorate. You don't know this team's usual response pattern. What do you do first?

clinical judgment and knowledge of rapid response protocols independent of unit familiarity

This role works 7 PM to 7:30 AM with every other weekend and some holidays. How have you managed fatigue and consistency on a night shift schedule in the past?

realistic understanding of the schedule demands and self-management on nights

If you floated to a unit and felt the assignment was unsafe given your current competencies, who would you go to and what would you say?

knowledge of the chain of communication and willingness to advocate for patient safety even as a temporary team member
