Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a shift where you had to cover multiple units at once because of staffing gaps. How did you decide where to put your attention first?

whether the candidate can triage house-wide priorities rather than just managing one unit's problems

Describe a time you had to investigate a medication error. What did you do first, and how did you handle the conversation with the nurse involved?

fairness and rigor in incident investigation versus a punitive or careless approach

Tell me about a time you had to move a patient or reassign staff to make room for an incoming admission, and it wasn't a popular decision on the receiving unit.

comfort making unpopular operational calls and communicating the reasoning to frustrated staff

Tell me about a time you noticed the same problem happening across multiple shifts or units. How did you bring it to the manager's attention?

pattern recognition and follow-through on systemic issues rather than just patching one-off incidents

Give me an example of a working relationship you built with a nurse manager or physician that made your job easier during a tough situation.

collaborative skill across disciplines and levels of hierarchy, which is central to this liaison-heavy role

Technical

How do you evaluate a patient's status when you're getting handoff from the ED, admitting, or another facility and you weren't there for the earlier care?

clinical judgment and thoroughness when accepting secondhand information under time pressure

How do you keep track of regulatory or compliance requirements during a shift when you're pulled in five directions?

practical systems for staying compliant under real operational chaos, not just textbook knowledge

This role has physical demands like sliding transfers and lifting up to 50 pounds, plus a lot of walking between units on a 15-2330 shift. How do you personally manage that pace over a full shift?

realistic self-assessment of physical stamina and safe technique for the job's demands

Situational

Walk me through what you would do the moment a Code 4 is called while you're also in the middle of resolving a bed placement issue.

ability to shift focus instantly to a life-threatening event without dropping other responsibilities

A charge nurse pages you saying a physician is refusing to come see a patient whose condition is worsening. What do you actually do, step by step?

escalation skill and willingness to advocate for the patient even when it means pushing back on a physician

Say a family member is escalating a complaint at the nurses' station and a reporter calls the unit asking about the same incident. How do you handle both at once?

judgment on guest relations and media protocol, knowing what to handle personally versus route to PR

You're the only supervisor on for second shift and the designated Safety Officer is out. A situation comes up that could threaten someone's safety. What's your process for stepping into that role?

understanding of delegated authority and willingness to act decisively in a safety emergency

A newer charge nurse comes to you overwhelmed and unsure how to handle an unstable patient plus two other urgent issues on the floor. What do you say and do?

mentoring style and ability to be a calm resource without simply taking over
