Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you noticed early signs of neurological change in a patient, like a new stroke or seizure symptom, and what you did next.

clinical assessment skill and speed of escalation, given the unit's stroke focus

This unit sees a lot of dementia and Alzheimer's patients alongside acute medical issues. Tell me about a time you cared for a confused or agitated patient while also managing other tasks on your assignment.

ability to balance safety and de-escalation with a full patient load

Since this floor pairs new grads with experienced nurses, tell me about a time you either taught a newer coworker something or leaned on a more experienced one for help.

fit with a mixed-experience, preceptor-heavy team culture

Tell me about a situation where you had to coordinate care with several different disciplines, like PT, social work, or a neurologist, to move a patient's plan forward.

comfort working the multidisciplinary team model this unit relies on

Describe a time you had to give bad news or a hard update to a patient or family and how you approached it.

bedside manner and composure with patients who may have serious neuro or chronic diagnoses

What does patient-centered, safe care mean to you in practice, on a floor where patients might be confused, in pain, or medically unstable all at once?

whether the candidate's values align with the unit's stated culture of collaborative, compassionate care

Technical

What's your process for doing a focused neuro check, and what specific findings would make you call the provider right away versus continue monitoring?

depth of actual neuro assessment knowledge, not just familiarity with the term

How do you interpret and respond to lab values that suggest an electrolyte imbalance, say a critically low sodium or potassium, in a patient who otherwise looks stable?

foundational lab interpretation and whether the nurse connects numbers to clinical action

What's your approach to managing a patient with chronic kidney disease alongside an acute issue, in terms of fluid balance and medication considerations?

pathophysiology knowledge across the mixed diagnosis population this floor carries

Situational

Walk me through how you'd prioritize your first hour on shift with a patient assignment of four to five med/surg patients, one of whom is a fresh stroke admit.

whether the candidate can triage competing acute needs on a realistic ratio rather than working task by task

A family member is upset because their loved one with dementia was found trying to climb out of bed unsupervised. How do you handle that conversation?

communication skill and accountability under stress without becoming defensive

You're mid-shift and two patients need attention at the same time, one with a new change in mental status and one who's due for a scheduled medication with a narrow window. What do you do?

real-time prioritization and understanding of which situations can and can't wait

You're three hours into a twelve-hour shift and realize your assignment is heavier than expected. How do you decide when to ask for help versus push through?

self-awareness about safety limits and willingness to escalate workload concerns
