Tell me about a time you disagreed with a physician's order. How did you handle it?

You're on night shift and a family member is angry that no one has updated them. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can de-escalate and communicate clearly with families during off-hours when fewer leaders are around.

About the work

What early signs of sepsis do you watch for in a med surg patient, and what do you do when you see them?

What they are checking: Whether they recognize sepsis early and escalate fast, since the unit cares for many sepsis and septic shock patients.

How do you prioritize your patients at the start of a shift when you have five or six assignments?

What they are checking: Whether they sort patients by acuity and risk rather than by room number, which keeps the sickest safe.

How do you care for a patient with liver failure who is becoming confused?

What they are checking: Whether they understand hepatic encephalopathy and the safety and medication steps that come with it.

How do you give a safe handoff report to the next nurse at shift change?

What they are checking: Whether their handoffs are structured and complete, since missed details at shift change cause harm.
