About your past
Tell me about your experience with adult psychiatric patients, or if you don't have much, what you've done that prepares you for it.
What they are checking: Whether they understand what inpatient psych work really involves before they start.
Psych patients often have medical problems too. Tell me about a time you caught a physical issue in a patient being treated for mental illness.
What they are checking: Whether they keep medical assessment sharp instead of attributing every change to the psychiatric diagnosis.
Tell me about a time a patient said something hurtful or threatening to you. How did you respond, and how did you handle it afterward?
What they are checking: Emotional resilience and professional boundaries, which decide whether someone burns out on a psych unit.
The schedule is 3:00 to 11:30 with rotating weekends and holidays. How does that fit your life right now?
What they are checking: Whether the evening and holiday rotation is truly workable for them, which predicts retention.
What would you do
A patient on the unit is pacing, clenching their fists and getting louder with another patient. Walk me through what you do from the first sign.
What they are checking: Whether they use early, verbal de-escalation and team awareness before anything turns physical.
A patient refuses their scheduled antipsychotic and says the medication is poisoning them. What do you do?
What they are checking: Whether they respect patient rights while knowing the legal and clinical steps for refusals.
You're guiding mental health techs on evening shift. One of them is arguing back with a patient who is baiting him. How do you step in?
What they are checking: Ability to lead unlicensed staff in keeping the milieu therapeutic without undermining them in front of patients.
About the work
How do you do a suicide risk assessment on admission, and what changes your level of observation?
What they are checking: Clinical judgment about risk, since missing it on a psych unit has the highest possible stakes.
What side effects do you watch for with antipsychotics and lithium, and which ones are emergencies?
What they are checking: Knowledge of dangers like neuroleptic malignant syndrome and lithium toxicity that nurses must catch early.
What does good handoff look like at 11:30 p.m. on a psych unit?
What they are checking: Whether they pass on behavior trends, precautions and risks, not just meds and vitals.
