Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a new product program you led from concept to launch. What was your role in building the schedule and how did you keep it on track?

whether the candidate has genuinely run end-to-end NPD programs versus just supporting pieces of one

Tell me about a time you had to lead a cross-functional team where you had no direct authority over the people involved. How did you get them to deliver?

ability to influence in a matrix organization, which is the core challenge of this role

Tell me about a time a functional manager pushed back on a commitment they'd made to your program. How did you handle it?

conflict resolution and stakeholder management without formal authority

Give me an example of a program that started slipping on schedule or budget. How did you identify it early, and what did you do about it?

proactive risk monitoring versus discovering problems late

Tell me about a time you had to present a program's status, including bad news, to senior leadership. How did you frame it?

executive communication skills and comfort with visibility and accountability

Technical

Describe a phase-gate or structured product development process you've worked in. How did you prepare for gate reviews and what happened when a program wasn't ready to pass?

real hands-on experience with formal gate processes like COMPASS, not just familiarity with the concept

How would you build a resource forecast for a program, and what do you do when the resources you request aren't fully available?

understanding of resource planning and negotiation skills when capacity is constrained

What's your approach to running a core team meeting so that decisions actually get made and action items get owned, not just discussed?

practical meeting and cadence discipline, since this is a named responsibility in the job

How have you used Power BI or Excel to track and report program metrics like schedule, cost, and risk to leadership?

actual fluency with the reporting tools named in the posting, not just listed on a resume

What do you know about the parts and accessories or aftermarket side of a business, and how is managing that different from managing a new vehicle or engine program?

whether the candidate understands the specific dynamics of P&A versus assuming all NPD is the same

Situational

Say you're two weeks from a gate review and Procurement tells you a key supplier can't hit the tooling deadline. What do you do in the next 48 hours?

how the candidate triages risk, communicates bad news, and builds contingency plans under time pressure

You're managing a portfolio of five or six programs at different stages at once. How do you decide where to spend your attention on a given day?

prioritization skills and whether they have a real system versus reacting to whoever is loudest

Imagine two functional leaders disagree on the right trade-off between cost and schedule for a program you own. How do you drive that to a decision while keeping Mercury's consensus-based culture in mind?

judgment in balancing fast decision-making against a stated organizational value of consensus
