Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through the last time you owned a major incident from the first alert to the postmortem. What happened and what did you do first?

whether the candidate can structure chaos into a repeatable process, not just react

Tell me about a time you had to run a bridge call with engineering, product, and a customer-facing team all at once, and they disagreed about priority. How did you handle it?

ability to lead cross-functional conversations and make a call under competing pressure

Tell me about a postmortem you wrote where the root cause wasn't what anyone expected going in. What changed your thinking during the investigation?

intellectual honesty and rigor in root cause analysis versus settling for a convenient answer

Describe a time a fix you applied under pressure turned out to be wrong or incomplete. What did you do next?

accountability and recovery skills when a quick fix backfires

Tell me about the last time you had to push back on a request to prioritize something you didn't think was actually urgent.

backbone and judgment when triage decisions create friction with stakeholders

Technical

How comfortable are you writing SQL to dig into a production database mid-incident, and what's a query you've written that actually helped you find a root cause?

real hands-on SQL skill versus just familiarity with the concept

What's your experience with tools like PagerDuty, Jira, and error monitoring platforms such as Sentry or Kibana? Give me a specific way you've used one to catch or manage an issue.

actual tool fluency versus resume buzzwords

How do you decide when an issue needs a full incident bridge versus something you can just quietly fix and move on?

understanding of incident severity thresholds and ITIL-style triage discipline

What basic knowledge do you have of a language like Java, Python, or Ruby, and how have you used that to read or troubleshoot code you didn't write yourself?

whether they can navigate a codebase enough to diagnose, even without being a developer

How do you decide what goes into a runbook versus what's a one-off? Give me an example of a runbook or SOP you actually built.

instinct for institutionalizing knowledge rather than just personally remembering fixes

Situational

Say a partner reports that loan applications are silently failing at submission. You have no error logs pointing anywhere obvious. How do you start narrowing this down?

practical troubleshooting instinct and comfort with ambiguity before jumping to a fix

You're on-call at 2 a.m. and get paged for something that turns out to be low-impact but the alert says critical. What do you do in the moment, and what do you do the next day?

judgment on triage severity and follow-through on fixing noisy alerting

A pattern of small, unrelated-looking tickets starts showing up across different partners in the same week. You don't have a fix yet. What do you do with that information?

whether they proactively connect dots instead of closing tickets one by one

You're managing an SLA clock, the fix is taking longer than expected, and the stakeholder is asking for updates every ten minutes. How do you manage that conversation while still doing the work?

ability to balance stakeholder communication with actually solving the problem
