Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you owned the financial performance of a product category. What were the targets, and how did you move the needle?

whether the candidate has actually been accountable for P&L or revenue/margin outcomes, not just marketing support

Tell me about a time you had to get Marketing, Sales, Procurement, and Engineering all aligned on a decision they didn't initially agree on.

ability to lead through influence in a matrix org without formal authority

Tell me about a product decision you made that turned out to be wrong. What did you miss and what changed after that?

self-awareness and whether they learn from misses rather than just reciting wins

Tell me about the last trade show or industry event you supported. What was your role, and what came out of it for the business?

whether they have real experience with the customer-facing, industry-presence side of the job, not just desk work

Describe a time you had to make a call with incomplete or ambiguous information because there was no precedent to follow.

comfort with the entrepreneurial, self-directed ambiguity the posting explicitly calls out

Technical

Tell me about the Fuel System and Rotating Electric categories as you understand them. What do you think are the biggest opportunities or risks in these product lines right now?

whether the candidate did homework on the actual product domain and can think like a category owner, not just a generalist PM

Describe a product charter or business plan you've written. What consumer or market insights did it rely on, and how did you validate them?

real experience translating research into a documented, actionable plan rather than vague strategic language

How do you approach a SIOP forecast for a parts category with unpredictable demand, like aftermarket electrical components? Walk me through your process.

hands-on familiarity with sales, inventory, and operations planning and forecasting discipline

What data sources or signals do you trust most when trying to spot a growth opportunity in a mature parts category, and why?

depth of analytical rigor versus generic buzzwords about being 'data-driven'

What do you know about the marine or powersports aftermarket parts business, and how is managing a category there different from a typical consumer product?

genuine industry knowledge versus transferable-but-generic product management background

Situational

Say you find that a competitor just launched a fuel pump or alternator line that undercuts our pricing by 15 percent. What do you do in the first two weeks?

structured competitive response and pricing strategy instincts under time pressure

If Procurement told you a key supplier for a rotating electric component was raising costs 20 percent with no warning, how would you handle the pricing and customer communication side of that?

composure and cross-functional coordination when a category hits an unplanned financial shock

Imagine your Category Director wants to expand the fuel system line into a new price tier, but your data suggests the market isn't there yet. How do you handle that disagreement?

ability to push back on leadership with evidence while staying collaborative
