About your past

Tell me about a P&ID you worked on. How did you make sure it matched what the client actually needed?

What they are checking: Whether they ask the client good questions instead of drafting from assumptions that fail at startup.

How do you coordinate with mechanical, electrical and controls engineers on a project?

What they are checking: Whether they share information early and clearly so other disciplines are not designing around stale data.

Tell me about a time you found an error in your own calculation after it had been shared. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they own mistakes quickly and openly, which matters in a team that builds on each other's numbers.

Have you supported field work, like startup or commissioning? What did you learn from it?

What they are checking: Whether they connect design work to what actually happens on site, which makes a better process engineer.

What would you do

The client changes their production rate halfway through design. What do you check first?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how a rate change ripples through equipment sizing, utilities and layout.

How do you manage your hours when you're working on three client projects at once?

What they are checking: Whether they can plan their time and flag conflicts early in a billable consulting environment.

About the work

Walk me through how you develop a process flow diagram and mass balance for a new production line.

What they are checking: Whether they can build the foundation documents that every other discipline depends on in process design.

How do you size equipment like tanks, pumps or heat exchangers for a food or beverage process?

What they are checking: Whether they can do basic process calculations correctly and know which assumptions matter most.

What sanitary design principles do you follow for food, beverage or life sciences equipment?

What they are checking: Whether they understand cleanability and hygienic design, which drive many decisions in these industries.

How do you approach utility requirements like steam, compressed air and water for a new process?

What they are checking: Whether they think beyond the main process to the support systems that often limit a plant.
