Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a power electronics failure you investigated. How did you find the root cause?

What they are checking: Principal-level failure analysis skill.

How do you work with motor and firmware engineers to optimize the whole drive system?

What they are checking: System-level collaboration rather than optimizing one part in isolation.

Tell me about a time you guided a team through a technical decision with no clear answer.

What they are checking: Leadership and judgment under technical uncertainty.

What would you do

A battery or charger design needs to meet UL safety requirements. How does that shape your circuit decisions?

What they are checking: Awareness of safety standards that shape power electronics design.

How do you balance component cost against reliability margin?

What they are checking: Honest tradeoff thinking grounded in field data and risk.

About the work

Walk me through how you would design an inverter for a high-power cordless tool.

What they are checking: Deep power stage knowledge covering switching devices, gate drive, sensing and layout.

How do you manage heat in a power stage packed inside a small tool housing?

What they are checking: Thermal design skills that keep components reliable under heavy loads.

When would you consider GaN or silicon carbide over silicon MOSFETs in a battery tool?

What they are checking: Understanding of newer device tradeoffs at tool voltages and costs.

How do you design a PCB layout to control switching noise and EMI?

What they are checking: Practical layout habits around loop area, grounding and snubbers.

How do you design protection for short circuits and overcurrent that reacts fast enough?

What they are checking: Fast, reliable protection that keeps users and hardware safe.
