Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to explain a complicated set of test results to a parent who was expecting a different diagnosis than what you found.

ability to communicate difficult findings with empathy while staying clinically accurate

Describe a case where your neuropsychological findings changed the treatment plan another provider, like a neurologist or psychiatrist, had already put in place.

real experience influencing multidisciplinary care and confidence advocating for findings

Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague's interpretation of a child's test results. What did you do?

how the candidate handles clinical disagreement without damaging working relationships

Tell me about a time you trained or mentored a graduate student or trainee during an evaluation. What did you focus on teaching them?

interest and capability in the teaching component of the role

What draws you to working within a large integrated system like this one, where referrals come from pediatrics, neurology, and psychiatry across many locations?

fit with a high-volume, multidisciplinary referral network rather than a standalone private practice model

Technical

Walk me through how you'd approach a neuropsych evaluation for a child referred after a traumatic brain injury versus one referred for a suspected learning disability. How would your test battery and interview approach differ?

whether the candidate can tailor assessment methodology to different referral questions rather than running a one-size-fits-all battery

You'll have a psychometrist supporting testing sessions. How do you divide responsibilities with them and how do you make sure the data they collect is reliable enough for you to interpret confidently?

experience delegating and quality-controlling work in a supervisory clinical relationship

How do you stay current on normative data and instrument selection for pediatric populations, especially when working with kids from different cultural or linguistic backgrounds?

awareness of test bias and commitment to equitable, valid assessment practices

What does your documentation workflow look like from the day of testing to the day the report is finalized, and how do you make sure you hit department timelines consistently?

organizational discipline and familiarity with the administrative side of clinical productivity

How do you approach differentiating ADHD from anxiety or a language-based learning disorder in a young child, when the symptom presentation overlaps quite a bit?

depth of differential diagnosis skill specific to pediatric neuropsychology

Situational

A pediatrician refers a child with vague concerns about school performance and no clear neurological history. How do you decide what to test for and how do you scope the evaluation so it stays useful and not open-ended?

clinical judgment in structuring an evaluation from an ambiguous referral

Suppose a family is anxious and pushing you to rush a report because they need it for a school placement decision next week. How do you balance thoroughness against their timeline pressure?

ability to hold professional standards while managing family stress and external deadlines

If a case came in that was outside your specialization, say a rare genetic syndrome you hadn't worked with before, how would you prepare yourself to evaluate that child appropriately?

intellectual humility and resourcefulness when facing unfamiliar clinical territory
