Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to deal with a patient or caller who was upset or difficult. What happened and how did you handle it?

whether the candidate can stay calm and professional with distressed patients, which is central to this role

Tell me about a time you noticed missing or incorrect information in a record or file and how you handled fixing it.

attention to detail and follow-through on accuracy, which matters for billing and medical records

Describe a time you had to juggle multiple tasks at once, like answering phones, greeting patients, and handling paperwork, all within a short window.

ability to function in a high-volume, multi-task front desk environment

Tell me about a time you worked closely with nurses or providers to make sure a patient's visit went smoothly. What was your role?

understanding of teamwork within a clinical care team, not just isolated desk work

Have you ever had to help move or assist a patient who needed physical support? What was that experience like for you?

comfort and awareness around the physical demands and safety protocols of the job

What does good customer service look like to you in a medical setting, compared to a retail or restaurant job, for example?

whether the candidate understands the higher stakes and sensitivity required in a healthcare front-desk role

Technical

Walk me through how you would check in a patient, confirm their insurance, and collect billing information at the start of an appointment.

basic understanding of front-desk billing and registration workflow

What experience do you have with electronic medical records or scheduling systems, and how comfortable are you learning new software?

technical readiness and adaptability to Advocate's systems

Situational

This is an infusion center, so many patients are dealing with serious or chronic illness and may be anxious or in pain when they arrive. How would you approach checking in a patient who seems scared or emotional?

empathy and awareness of the specific patient population, not just generic customer service skills

Suppose a patient's insurance information doesn't match what's on file, or something looks off with their coverage. What would you do in that moment, with the patient sitting in front of you?

problem-solving under pressure without holding up the line or embarrassing the patient

This role is per diem, meaning your schedule can change week to week between 8:30 and 5:00, Monday through Friday. How do you manage that kind of variable schedule with your other commitments?

reliability and flexibility given the per diem, variable nature of the position

If a patient calls asking about a bill they don't understand, but you can see there's an error in how it was charged, what would you say to them and what would you do next?

honesty, communication skill, and knowing when to escalate versus resolve directly

You're working alone at the front desk and three things happen at once: a phone is ringing, a patient is checking in, and another patient looks like they might be feeling unwell. What do you do first and why?

prioritization and judgment in a fast-paced, sometimes medically sensitive environment
