Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through the last time you had to draw blood or start an IV on a patient who was scared or combative. What did you actually do?

whether the candidate can handle hands-on technical tasks under emotional or physical resistance from a patient

Tell me about a time you noticed something off with a patient, like a change in color or breathing, and it wasn't officially your job to catch it. What did you do?

whether the candidate proactively communicates observations to the RN rather than waiting to be asked

Tell me about a time you had to calm down a family member who was upset or yelling in the ER. What worked?

interpersonal skill and composure with distressed families in a high-stress setting

This role runs 7am to 7pm with rotating weekends every second or third week. What's made a schedule like that work or not work for you in the past?

realistic fit with the shift pattern and honesty about lifestyle constraints

Tell me about a physically demanding shift, maybe one involving repeated lifting or transferring patients. How did you manage your own body and energy through it?

physical readiness and technique awareness for the lifting and transfer demands listed in the job

Technical

What's your experience level with phlebotomy and obtaining lab specimens? How many draws would you say you've done in a typical week at your last job?

actual hands-on competency and volume comfort with a core daily task

Have you placed Foley catheters before, and what's your process for making sure it's done safely and comfortably for the patient?

technical skill and awareness of infection control and patient dignity during an invasive procedure

How comfortable are you charging out procedures and documenting in an electronic health record, and which systems have you used?

readiness to handle EHR documentation and billing accuracy without heavy retraining

Describe a shift where you had to transport a patient who was unstable or in pain to another department. What precautions did you take?

understanding of safe transport technique and awareness of patient risk during movement

What's your current certification status, whether that's CNA, EMT, or medical assistant, and where are you at with BLS?

verifying the candidate actually meets the hard licensure requirement for the role

Situational

Say you're covering three patients in a busy ER and one needs a Foley catheter placed, one needs vitals rechecked because the nurse is worried about their pressure, and a new patient just arrived by EMS. How do you decide what happens first?

prioritization skill in a fast-moving, unpredictable environment with competing urgent tasks

Tell me about a time a physician or nurse gave you an instruction that didn't match what you were seeing with the patient. What did you do?

judgment about when and how to speak up versus defer to clinical staff

This unit sees patients from newborns to elderly adults. How would your approach change caring for a scared toddler versus a confused 80 year old?

understanding of age-specific care principles required across the lifespan

Tell me about a time a piece of equipment malfunctioned in the middle of patient care. What did you do in the moment?

practical troubleshooting and knowing when to escalate versus handle it yourself
