Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you had to give a busy RN an update on a patient and it actually changed what they did next.

whether the candidate understands the extern's role is to feed accurate, timely information to the RN, not to act independently

This program moves you between three very different units every month. Tell me about a time you had to adjust quickly to a new environment, team, or set of expectations.

adaptability and how fast they can get oriented without slowing the unit down

Tell me about a time in clinicals when you had to administer or assist with a medication and something didn't go exactly as planned.

honesty about mistakes or near-misses and whether they escalated appropriately

How would you explain a plan of care to a patient's family member who's anxious and asking a lot of questions?

communication skills with patients and families, which sit alongside RN collaboration duties

Why this externship, and why Aurora Sinai specifically, instead of just waiting to apply for a new grad RN role after you finish school?

motivation for the extended, part-time, unpaid-in-benefits commitment and genuine interest in the health equity mission

Technical

How do you think about the difference in patient needs between someone on the Acute Care for the Elderly and Stroke unit versus someone on Cardiac Telemetry?

basic clinical knowledge across the specific units in this rotation, not generic nursing theory

What does delegating to a Nursing Assistant or Health Unit Coordinator actually look like for you, given you're not licensed yet?

whether they understand delegation as a skill they're building, not authority they already have

Walk me through your Med Surg and pharmacology coursework. What's a concept from those classes you've actually had to apply at the bedside?

verifying the required coursework is real knowledge, not just a completed transcript line

Situational

You're on your first month on Med Surg Ortho and you notice a patient's blood glucose reading looks off compared to their last one. Walk me through what you do.

whether the candidate knows their scope stops at reporting and escalating, not diagnosing or acting alone

Say you're assigned four patients and one suddenly needs more attention than expected. What do you do with the rest of your assignment?

time management and prioritization skills under a real caseload, which the posting calls out directly

Your school schedule is going to run alongside this externship for a full year, one shift a week. How are you planning to manage both without either one slipping?

realistic commitment and planning for the long, part-time, low-hours structure of this program

Describe a moment in a clinical rotation where something urgent happened and you had to stay in your lane while still being useful.

judgment during emergencies and respect for supervision boundaries, which the job explicitly limits

This job involves lifting up to 50 pounds, sliding transfers of 150 pounds with help, and being on your feet a full shift. What's your experience with that kind of physical work?

honest self-assessment of physical readiness for the stated demands
