Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a class project or research effort where you worked with vibrations, acoustics, or signal processing. What was the actual task and what did you learn from it?

whether the candidate has real hands-on exposure to the core technical domain versus just coursework theory

Tell me about a time you had to set up or troubleshoot a piece of equipment you weren't fully trained on. What did you do?

comfort with hands-on lab work and initiative when instructions are incomplete

Tell me about a time your test results didn't match what you expected. What did you do next?

root-cause thinking and honesty about ambiguous or contradictory data

Describe a time you had to explain a technical result to someone who wasn't as deep into the details as you were. How did you approach it?

ability to write clear reports and present findings to engineers and non-specialists

What's your experience with engines, powertrains, or mechanical systems outside the classroom, whether that's a hobby, competition team, or a job?

mechanical aptitude and genuine curiosity about how machines work, which the posting explicitly values

Tell me about a time you were working on a multidisciplinary team where people had different priorities. How did you keep the project moving?

ability to collaborate with engineers and technicians across a cross-functional test program

Technical

Say you're given a raw vibration signal from an accelerometer on a test engine and it looks noisy and inconsistent. How would you go about figuring out whether that's a real signal, a sensor problem, or a data acquisition issue?

basic troubleshooting logic for instrumentation and signal integrity, not just textbook DSP knowledge

Explain the difference between time domain and frequency domain analysis, and give an example of when you'd use an FFT on test data.

whether the candidate actually understands digital signal processing fundamentals they'll use daily

If you were tasked with measuring vibration on an outboard engine during a dynamometer test, what sensors and setup would you consider, and what could go wrong with your measurement?

practical grasp of instrumentation choices and awareness of sources of measurement error

Have you used MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, or Simcenter Testlab for any project? Walk me through what you did with it.

actual proficiency level with the specific analysis tools this team uses, not just resume keywords

Situational

You're on a test boat collecting on-water NVH data and the weather turns choppy partway through the test. What do you do?

judgment about safety, data quality, and when to call off a test

If two sensors are giving you conflicting readings on the same test and you're on a tight timeline to report results, how would you handle that?

how the candidate balances thoroughness against deadline pressure without cutting corners on data integrity

If you noticed a safety issue during a lab or on-water test, maybe a loose sensor cable near moving parts, what would you do in that moment?

seriousness about following safety practices in a physical lab and marine test environment
