About your past

Tell me about a time you had to make a decision on your own in the lab without a supervisor around.

What they are checking: Whether they can use the independent judgment the posting asks for on an evening shift.

Which areas of the lab are you strongest in and which would you need training on?

What they are checking: Whether they know their own skill level honestly, which helps the lab place and train them.

Tell me about a time you found or caused an error in a result. What happened next?

This is a 10-hour evening shift. How do you stay accurate near the end of a long shift?

What would you do

A result doesn't fit the patient's history, like a sudden huge change in hemoglobin. What do you do?

How do you handle an analyzer that goes down when samples are piling up?

What they are checking: Whether they can troubleshoot, use backup methods and keep the right people informed during a breakdown.

About the work

Walk me through the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of testing and where errors most often happen.

What they are checking: Whether they understand that most lab errors happen before and after the test, not during it.

Your quality control run is out of range. What do you do before releasing any patient results?

What they are checking: Whether they stop, troubleshoot and document rather than releasing results they cannot stand behind.

You get a critical value on the evening shift. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they know critical values must be called quickly, read back and documented.

How do you keep up with regulatory requirements like CAP or CLIA in your daily work?

What they are checking: Whether they see compliance as part of daily habits like documentation and maintenance, not just inspection season.
