Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you grew a mechanical engineer or drafter into someone who could own work you used to own.
What they are checking: Whether they develop people on purpose, which matters because this role leads the team technically and as a manager.
Tell me about a time a drawing or model from your team caused a problem on the shop floor or at a customer site. What did you change afterward?
What they are checking: Whether they own quality failures and fix the process behind them rather than blaming one person.
You'd have a solid line to the Director of US Mechanical Engineering and dotted lines to other leaders. How have you handled a dual reporting setup before?
What they are checking: Whether they can keep several bosses informed and aligned without playing them against each other.
What would you do
Your team's daily priorities get set by leaders of NPD, Sustaining and Sold Work. What do you do when all three want the same engineer this week?
What they are checking: Whether they can broker competing demands openly instead of quietly picking a favorite or burning out the team.
You may also lead a project with mechanical, electrical, software and systems engineers. How do you run design reviews so the mechanical side doesn't dominate?
What they are checking: Whether they can lead a multidisciplinary team fairly when their own background is only one of the disciplines.
An engineer on your team is technically strong but keeps missing commitments to the NPD leader. How do you handle it?
What they are checking: Whether they address performance directly and with care, rather than covering for a strong engineer.
About the work
How do you decide when a design is ready to release to manufacturing versus needing another review cycle?
What they are checking: Their judgment about risk and readiness, since a late catch on a sold machine is far more expensive than an early one.
Walk me through how you would plan and distribute resources across a quarter when sold-work deadlines keep moving.
What they are checking: Whether they have a real capacity planning method or just react to whoever is loudest that day.
What standards do you hold your team to for drawings, tolerancing and BOM accuracy, and how do you check them?
What they are checking: Whether they know where mechanical errors usually hide and have a practical way to catch them before release.
How do you balance reusing proven machine designs against the push for new product development?
What they are checking: Their sense of when standardization saves money and when it holds the product back from what customers need.
