Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you presented design concepts and the team chose a different one. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can present options with honest tradeoffs and accept the decision gracefully.

Tell me about a design you verified through testing or a prototype. What did you learn?

What they are checking: Whether they understand verification and validation as part of design, not an afterthought.

How do you take input on design requirements from engineers, manufacturing and service?

What they are checking: Whether they gather requirements from all the groups the posting lists.

What would you do

A fabricator calls and says your part can't be made as drawn. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they listen to the shop floor and revise the design instead of blaming the vendor.

How would you design an assembly to be easy for a technician to service in the field?

What they are checking: Whether they think about the whole life of the product, not just how it looks on screen.

About the work

Which CAD tools have you used most, and how do you structure a multi-level assembly model?

What they are checking: Whether they build clean, organized models that others can edit and that drive accurate BOMs.

Walk me through how you create a 2D print from a 3D model for a sheet metal part.

What they are checking: Whether they know flat patterns, bend notes, dimensioning and tolerances that fabricators need.

How do you decide between a welded assembly and a bolted one?

What they are checking: Whether they understand fabrication and assembly tradeoffs like cost, serviceability and strength.

How do you estimate the cost of a part before it's quoted?

What they are checking: Whether they understand how material, process and complexity drive component costing.

How do you manage revisions so the shop never builds from an old drawing?

What they are checking: Whether they follow revision control habits that prevent costly rework.
