Likely interview questions for this role
Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.
About your past
Tell me about a time you found a data quality issue before it caused a bad decision. How did you catch it and what did you do next?
What they are checking: proactive vigilance around data correctness and whether they escalate rather than quietly fix and move on
Tell me about a time you had to explain a technical or statistical finding to someone who wasn't analytically minded. How did you adjust your explanation?
What they are checking: ability to translate technical work into plain language for non-technical partners like Sales or Customer Service
Describe a project where you automated a manual reporting process. What made you decide it was worth automating, and what was the outcome?
What they are checking: initiative and cost-benefit thinking around engineering time versus recurring manual effort
Tell me about a time you had to push back on a request because the scope wasn't clear or the ask didn't make sense. How did you handle it?
What they are checking: whether they ask clarifying questions early rather than building the wrong thing
How comfortable are you picking up new tools like Python or Snowflake on the job, and can you give an example of teaching yourself something technical quickly?
What they are checking: self-directed learning ability, since the role explicitly promises growth into new tools with coaching
What would you do
Imagine Finance and the CRM team ask for conflicting numbers on customer retention from the same dataset. How do you figure out what's actually going on?
What they are checking: diagnostic approach to discrepancies and comfort being the referee between stakeholders with competing definitions
If a stakeholder asked you to help evaluate whether a new parking partnership was worth pursuing, what data would you want and how would you structure the analysis?
What they are checking: ability to scope an open-ended business question into a concrete analytical plan
Suppose you're asked to help flag fraud or account abuse using marketing and transaction data. What kind of patterns or signals would you look for first?
What they are checking: analytical creativity applied to an unfamiliar, less structured problem outside core marketing metrics
About the work
Walk me through a SQL query you've written that used window functions or CTEs to solve a real analysis problem. What was the business question behind it?
What they are checking: whether the candidate has genuine hands-on SQL depth beyond basic joins, not just textbook familiarity
Say you're asked to build a CAC or ROAS report that pulls from paid search, paid social, app store, and affiliate spend data. How would you think about unifying those sources into one attribution model?
What they are checking: understanding of multi-channel attribution logic and the practical mess of reconciling inconsistent spend data
Have you built or maintained dbt models before? If so, walk me through how you approached testing and getting a pull request through peer review.
What they are checking: actual familiarity with dbt workflows and git-based code review, or how quickly they could ramp up if new to it
How would you design a test and control setup to measure the lift from a CRM email campaign?
What they are checking: grasp of experiment design fundamentals like control group selection, contamination risk, and measuring incrementality
What's your experience building dashboards in Looker or a similar BI tool, and how do you decide what belongs on a dashboard versus a one-off analysis?
What they are checking: practical reporting judgment and whether they understand who consumes dashboards and why
