Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through a variance analysis you did where the first explanation turned out to be wrong.

What they are checking: Whether they dig past the obvious answer to find the real driver before presenting it to business leaders.

Tell me about a time a business leader disagreed with your numbers. How did you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they can defend analysis with evidence while staying open to information the business has and they do not.

Which regulations or policies have you had to be the go-to person on in a finance role, and how did you keep current?

What they are checking: Whether they can act as the subject matter expert the posting describes rather than relying on others to interpret rules.

Give me an example of an analysis you did that changed how resources were allocated.

What they are checking: Whether their work has actually influenced decisions, which is the point of a decision-support finance role.

What would you do

Trading revenue came in well above forecast this quarter. How do you figure out whether that is repeatable?

What they are checking: Whether they separate one-time market conditions from durable business performance before it shapes next year's plan.

Leadership asks for the financial impact of a new initiative by tomorrow morning, and the data is incomplete. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can deliver a useful answer under time pressure while being clear about assumptions and limits.

How do you decide what goes into a monthly performance review deck and what gets left out?

What they are checking: Whether they edit for what leaders need to decide, rather than showing every number they calculated.

About the work

How would you explain the main revenue drivers of a capital markets business to someone coming from a commercial banking finance team?

What they are checking: Whether they understand trading, underwriting and advisory revenue and how volatile each can be quarter to quarter.

How do you build an annual plan for a business where revenue swings with markets you cannot predict?

What they are checking: Whether they use scenarios, drivers and ranges rather than pretending a single point forecast is reliable.

What do you think balance sheet optimization means for a capital markets business, and how would finance support it?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that capital and balance sheet are scarce resources that should be priced into business decisions.
