Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you had to bring order to a merchandising program that had grown inconsistent across a lot of retail locations. What did you standardize and how did you get buy in?

whether they have real experience building and governing visual standards across a fragmented retail footprint, not just following someone else's guidelines

Tell me about a retail visual identity or brand standards project you owned end to end, from documenting the guidelines to getting retailers to actually follow them.

ownership of the full lifecycle, from strategy on paper to real-world adoption

Tell me about a time you managed multiple external vendors, like print or signage or fixtures, on a project with a hard deadline. What went wrong and how did you fix it?

real vendor management chops under pressure, including quality control and timeline recovery

Describe a situation where Sales, Creative, and Brand teams all had different opinions about how something should look or work in a retail environment. How did you get to a decision?

cross-functional influence and comfort mediating between groups with competing priorities

Tell me about a time you had to train field or sales teams on a new tool or standard and they were slow to adopt it. What did you do differently to get it to stick?

ability to drive adoption of process changes with people outside their direct reporting line

Technical

Have you worked with planogram software like IWD Mockshop or similar tools? Walk me through how you'd set up governance for a new retail planogram platform from scratch.

hands-on familiarity with planogram systems and whether they can build process, not just use the tool

How have you built or managed a budget for a retail marketing or production program, and how did you track whether it was actually delivering ROI?

financial literacy and whether they think about spend as an investment to justify, not just a number to stay under

What KPIs would you use to judge whether a retail merchandising or promotional program is working, and how would you go about collecting that data from retailers?

whether they know what good measurement looks like in a channel where data often comes secondhand from retail partners

Situational

Say a major retail partner is not following the signage and merchandising standards you set, and it is hurting brand consistency. What do you do?

how they balance diplomacy with enforcement when they have influence but not authority over the retailer

If you had a fixed budget for POP and signage rollout but retailers wanted more customization than you could afford to produce at scale, how would you handle that tradeoff?

ability to balance standardization against retailer-specific demands within real constraints

How would you make sure Mercury's product content and brand look accurate on a retailer's own website, when you don't control that website directly?

understanding of how to manage brand consistency across digital touchpoints they don't own

You're three days a week in Fond du Lac working with Sales, Creative, and Brand, but also traveling to support retailers. How do you prioritize when everyone wants time on your calendar at once?

time management and prioritization skill in a role pulled in many directions at once
