Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you got a lawmaker or local official to change their position, or at least soften it. What did you bring them?

What they are checking: Whether their advocacy relies on useful data and relationships rather than pressure or connections alone.

Walk me through a project you managed from start to finish where you had no direct authority over the people doing the work.

What they are checking: Whether they can run project management through influence, since cross-functional teams here do not report to them.

Tell me about a relationship with a civic or business leader that you built before you needed anything from them.

What they are checking: Whether they invest in long-term stakeholder relationships, which is what makes advocacy work when an issue suddenly matters.

Tell me about a time you had to deliver bad news about a policy outcome to leadership. How did you frame it?

What they are checking: Whether they communicate risks early and plainly, which builds the trust a government relations function depends on.

What would you do

A new state bill on truck emissions or driver hours drops on a Friday. How do you figure out what it means for Ryder by Monday?

What they are checking: Whether they can triage legislation quickly by pulling in the right subject matter experts and framing business impact clearly.

Operations leaders want you to fight a local ordinance, but you think opposing it publicly would hurt Ryder's standing in that community. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back on internal stakeholders with reasoning and offer a better path rather than simply complying.

Most of this role is state and local, with some federal work. How would you decide where to spend limited time across all those levels?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize by business impact and odds of influence instead of chasing the most visible issues.

About the work

Ryder runs trucks, warehouses and leasing across many states. Which state or local issue would you start tracking in your first month here, and why that one?

What they are checking: Whether they can connect public policy to a logistics business model instead of following politics for its own sake.

The posting asks you to define measurable advocacy outcomes. How do you measure success in government relations when a bill can take three sessions to move?

What they are checking: Whether they can report honest progress to business leaders without claiming credit for outcomes they did not cause.

You will build internal governing policies, controls and procedures for the government relations program. What belongs in that policy set, in your view?

What they are checking: Whether they understand lobbying registration, gift rules and political spending controls that keep a public company out of trouble.

How do you write a one-page brief on a policy issue for a senior director who has five minutes?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn complex regulation into a clear risk, recommendation and ask that busy executives will act on.
