About your past

Tell me about a time you built or rebuilt an engineering team. Who did you hire and why?

What they are checking: A real track record of hiring and developing engineers rather than just managing existing staff.

Tell me about a packaging design that cut cost without hurting performance.

What they are checking: Whether they can deliver the cost-effective solutions the posting asks for while protecting function and compliance.

How do you keep your team close to what customers in the medical device industry actually need?

What they are checking: Whether they keep engineers in direct contact with customers so designs solve real problems.

Tell me about a design that failed after it reached production. What did you change in your process afterward?

What they are checking: Honesty about failures and whether they fix the system that let the failure through.

What would you do

Sales promises a customer a timeline your team can't hit. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Whether they push back with facts and offer options rather than overcommitting engineers or cutting corners.

How do you balance speed to market against the testing medical device customers require?

What they are checking: Judgment about where to move fast and where shortcuts would put patients or the business at risk.

An experienced engineer on your team resists a new design process. How do you bring them along?

What they are checking: Ability to lead change with respected senior people without losing them or their knowledge.

About the work

How would you organize a design engineering team so product development, package design and tooling work as one group instead of handing off to each other?

What they are checking: Whether they can integrate separate engineering resources into one team, which the posting names as the core mandate.

What does a regulatory-conscious design practice look like for thermoformed medical packaging?

What they are checking: Whether they build design controls, risk analysis and ISO 11607 thinking into the process from the first concept.

How do you measure whether your design team is doing well?

What they are checking: Whether they track meaningful metrics like cycle time, first-pass success and tooling rework rather than activity.

How do you work with tooling suppliers or an in-house tool shop to shorten development time?

What they are checking: Practical understanding of how tooling lead times drive commercialization schedules in thermoforming.
