Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

You'd lead a team of two or three maintenance colleagues at a steel and poly plant. How do you manage a team that small when you're also turning wrenches yourself?

What they are checking: Whether they can balance hands-on repair work with leading people, since a tiny team leaves no room for a desk-only manager.

Tell me about a piece of equipment that kept breaking down and how you finally fixed the root cause.

What they are checking: Whether they solve chronic failures for good rather than repeating the same quick fix every week.

Tell me about an improvement you drove that made equipment run better or cost less to maintain.

What they are checking: Whether they go beyond keeping things running and can point to a measurable improvement they led.

What would you do

A steel drum line and a poly line both go down at 7 AM, and you have three people. How do you decide where to send them?

What they are checking: Whether they prioritize by safety, customer orders, and downtime cost instead of whoever complains the loudest.

Production wants to skip a scheduled PM to hit a shipment. How do you handle that conversation?

What they are checking: Whether they can push back with data on risk while still supporting the plant's need to ship.

How do you make sure lockout/tagout is followed every time, even when a fix looks quick?

What they are checking: Whether they hold the line on energy control, because a manager who lets shortcuts slide sets the tone for the whole team.

One of your mechanics is skilled but keeps leaving work orders undocumented. How do you address it?

What they are checking: Whether they can coach a strong performer on discipline and explain why equipment history matters for future repairs.

About the work

How do you build a preventive maintenance program that actually gets done when the team is this small?

What they are checking: Whether they can scale PM to real staffing and protect PM time from being eaten by daily breakdowns.

Walk me through how you troubleshoot an electrical or PLC fault on a machine you've never seen before.

What they are checking: Whether they have a logical method for troubleshooting and can work from prints and I/O rather than guessing.

How do you keep spare parts on hand without tying up too much money in the storeroom?

What they are checking: Whether they think about critical spares, lead times, and cost together instead of either hoarding or running out.
