Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you built a product strategy for an insurance line from the ground up. What data and market signals drove your decisions?

whether the candidate can translate market and customer insight into a coherent, defensible strategy rather than just executing someone else's plan

Tell me about a product initiative where actuarial, underwriting, and distribution disagreed on the right path. How did you get to a decision?

cross-functional influence skills and comfort navigating conflict without formal authority over those teams

Give me an example where you used financial or data analysis to change a decision that leadership had already leaned toward.

ability to use data to challenge the room, not just support a predetermined conclusion

Have you had profit and loss accountability for a product or line before? Walk me through how you tracked performance and what you did when results were off target.

genuine ownership of business outcomes, not just influence-level involvement

Tell me about a time you had to mentor or guide a less experienced team member through a product decision they weren't confident about.

leadership style and willingness to develop others, not just deliver individually

Describe the largest cross-divisional project you've led. What made it complex, and where did it almost go off the rails?

capacity to manage scale and complexity, and honesty about real obstacles rather than a polished success story

Technical

How do you approach a rate revision project from start to finish, and what's your role versus actuarial's?

real familiarity with the rate revision process and clear understanding of role boundaries with actuarial

What's your process for validating a new product idea before it goes to full development, and what would you do differently on a farm and ranch line versus a personal lines product?

depth of experience with lean or agile innovation methods and whether they can adapt them to the specifics of a niche commercial line

What do you see as the biggest competitive or regulatory pressures facing farm and ranch insurance right now, and how would that shape a product roadmap?

actual market knowledge of the farm and ranch space and whether that knowledge is current

Situational

Say you find that a segment of Commercial Farm & Ranch policies is growing fast but losing money. How would you figure out whether the fix is pricing, underwriting appetite, or product design?

structured problem-solving across pricing, underwriting, and product levers, and whether they know which team owns which lever

How would you go about doing root cause analysis if retention on a farm and ranch product suddenly dropped in one region?

structured diagnostic thinking versus jumping to a fix without isolating the cause

If underwriting wanted to tighten appetite in a way that would hurt growth targets, and distribution was pushing back hard, how would you resolve that?

ability to balance growth versus profitability tension and mediate between stakeholders with opposing incentives
