Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you found a documentation gap right before an inspection. What did you do?

What they are checking: Honesty about gaps and a habit of fixing the process, not backfilling records.

Tell me about a policy or procedure you wrote or revised. How did you get people to actually follow it?

What they are checking: Whether they think about adoption and training, not just about writing a correct document.

What would you do

A unit's glucose meter quality control fails at 2 a.m. What should happen, and how do you make sure it does?

What they are checking: Whether they design processes so staff stop testing on failed QC and patients are not treated on bad results.

A nurse keeps skipping the required QC step because they are busy. How do you handle it?

What they are checking: Ability to enforce lab standards with clinical staff outside their reporting line, respectfully and firmly.

You support the Laboratory Manager. How do you decide what to handle on your own and what to bring to them?

What they are checking: Judgment about independence and escalation in a role that is part technical expert and part coordinator.

About the work

Walk me through how you would run a point-of-care testing program, like glucose meters, across many nursing units.

What they are checking: Whether they understand the full cycle of training, competency, QC, device management and documentation for POCT.

What regulations and accrediting standards have you worked under, such as CLIA, CAP or The Joint Commission?

What they are checking: Working familiarity with the rules that decide whether the lab can keep operating.

How do you track annual competency for dozens of nurses who perform point-of-care testing?

What they are checking: Practical systems for keeping records complete, since missing competency is a common survey finding.

Which key performance indicators would you track for a small hospital lab, and how would you report them?

What they are checking: Whether they can pick measures that actually reflect quality and turnaround rather than reporting numbers for their own sake.

How do you approach troubleshooting an analyzer that is giving results that do not fit the patient's picture?

What they are checking: Systematic troubleshooting across sample, reagent, calibration and operator before releasing or rejecting results.

What is your experience with operational logs like temperature, maintenance and reagent lots, and how do you review them?

What they are checking: Whether they review logs for trends and gaps rather than just confirming they were filled in.
