Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time a vendor's roadmap didn't match what your business needed. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they can work vendor support channels and influence direction instead of just waiting or hacking around it.

How do you explain a technical design to business partners in HR or security who own the process but not the code?

What they are checking: Whether they can translate design choices into plain process terms so the people who own the rules can sign off.

Tell me about a time you led other developers on a design without being their manager.

What they are checking: Whether they can set technical direction through reasoning and trust, which is what a lead consultant role relies on.

What would you do

How do you decide whether to configure a vendor product or write custom code to fill a gap?

What they are checking: Whether they weigh upgrade pain and support cost before building around a vendor tool instead of with it.

An auditor finds terminated employees who still had access for days. How would you investigate and fix it?

What they are checking: Whether they trace the root cause through the provisioning pipeline and treat access removal as a security priority.

How do you handle least-privilege when the business keeps asking for broad role bundles to save time?

What they are checking: Whether they can balance convenience against security and propose role designs that serve both.

About the work

Walk me through an automated access provisioning flow you've built or worked on, from a hire event to the user having access.

What they are checking: Whether they understand joiner, mover and leaver flows end to end and where they usually break in practice.

How would you design a Java service that provisions accounts into several downstream systems when some of them fail?

What they are checking: Whether they think about retries, idempotency and partial failure, which matter a lot when access is on the line.

What identity platforms or standards have you worked with, such as SCIM, SAML, OAuth or a vendor IGA tool?

What they are checking: Whether their identity knowledge is hands-on and specific enough to configure vendor tools and integrate custom code.

How do you approach testing provisioning logic so a bad change doesn't grant the wrong people access?

What they are checking: Whether they build safeguards like test environments, approval checks and rollback, given the cost of a mistake.
