Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you had to change a clinician's practice, like a physician who wasn't following isolation precautions.

What they are checking: Whether they can influence people with more authority without creating defensiveness.

Tell me about an education session you led that actually changed what staff did afterward.

What they are checking: Whether they teach in a way that sticks, since the role serves as a mentor and subject matter expert.

What would you do

You're on call overnight and get a page about a patient with suspected measles in the emergency department. What do you do in the first hour?

What they are checking: Whether they act fast on isolation, exposure tracing and public health reporting during a real event.

Your infection data shows a rise in catheter-associated urinary tract infections. How do you present that to unit leaders?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn data into a clear story and a plan rather than just sharing numbers.

How do you balance CDC recommendations with what's realistic for staff on a busy unit?

What they are checking: Whether they can apply guidance practically without lowering the standard for safety.

About the work

Walk me through how you'd investigate a cluster of three C. diff cases on one unit in the same week.

What they are checking: Whether they can move from case finding to source review to controls in a clear, organized way.

How do you decide whether an infection meets NHSN surveillance criteria for a healthcare associated infection?

What they are checking: Whether they apply standard definitions consistently, since reporting to CMS depends on getting them right.

How do you stay ready for a Joint Commission survey when it comes to infection prevention?

What they are checking: Whether they keep compliance up every day instead of scrambling before surveyors arrive.

When would you need to report something to the Illinois or local health department, and how do you make sure it happens?

What they are checking: Whether they know reportable disease rules and have a reliable process so nothing slips through.

What do you look for on surveillance rounds in a high risk area like the ICU?

What they are checking: Whether they watch real practice, like line care and hand hygiene, not just paperwork.

How would you handle a healthcare worker exposure, such as a staff member exposed to TB?

What they are checking: Whether they understand employee health follow-up as well as patient-side infection prevention.
