Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a PLC program change you wrote that fixed a real production problem.

What they are checking: Whether they can program, not just troubleshoot, which separates this role from a general electrician.

This role includes mentoring other electricians. How have you helped someone build their controls skills?

What they are checking: Whether they teach patiently and share knowledge rather than becoming the only person who can fix things.

You'll rotate between days and nights each month on 12-hour shifts. How do you manage that?

What they are checking: Whether they're realistic about rotating shifts, since attendance is tied to a quarterly bonus.

Tell me about a time a fix you made didn't hold. What did you learn?

What they are checking: Whether they're honest about failures and adjust their approach rather than repeating the same fix.

What would you do

What does taking ownership of an electrical system mean to you in a plant like this?

What they are checking: Whether they think about the long-term health of systems, including documentation, spares and recurring faults.

An operator asks you to jumper out a sensor so the line can keep running. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they refuse unsafe bypasses and find a proper fix or path forward instead.

About the work

Walk me through how you go online with a PLC to find out why a machine stopped mid-cycle.

What they are checking: Whether they use the logic, I/O status and fault history to find the cause instead of guessing at hardware.

How do you make sure a logic change you make on nights doesn't create a new problem for the day shift?

What they are checking: Whether they back up, test, comment and communicate changes so the next crew isn't surprised.

A drive and a motor keep failing on the same line. How do you dig into it?

What they are checking: Whether they look at load, wiring, parameters and environment to find root cause instead of swapping parts.

How do you stay safe when troubleshooting a panel that has to stay energized?

What they are checking: Whether they know arc flash rules and PPE, and limit live work to what's truly necessary.

How do you keep electrical prints and PLC backups up to date after you make changes?

What they are checking: Whether they keep documentation current, which saves hours on the next breakdown.
