Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about explaining a policy to someone who thought it was unfair. How did that go?

What they are checking: Whether they can explain the reasoning behind a policy with empathy, rather than just citing the rule and leaving the person frustrated.

How do you stay current on employment law changes and work out what they mean for your department?

What they are checking: Whether they have a real habit for tracking employment law changes and translating them into practical steps for their own department.

This reports to the Executive Director of Management Services in the Department of Safety and Security, covering emergency management, environmental health and safety and campus safety. What do you want to know about the headcount you would support and the stated salary range?

What they are checking: Whether they ask how many employees they would support and check the pay range, showing they want a realistic picture before committing.

What would you do

This is the first point of contact for human resources issues across a safety and security department. Walk me through how you would handle a supervisor who calls about a pay problem for one of their staff.

What they are checking: Whether they start by gathering facts and fixing the employee's pay quickly, since this role is the first stop for department HR problems.

How do you write a job description with a unit leader who wants to describe the person they already have in mind?

What they are checking: The job description development this posting names, and its usual pitfall.

An employee comes to you in confidence about something difficult. How do you decide what you can keep to yourself?

What they are checking: Whether they know where confidentiality ends, because some disclosures legally require action no matter what the employee asked for.

How do you make sure a new employee is fully onboarded and paid correctly on their first cycle?

What they are checking: Whether they own the onboarding details end to end, because a new hire who is not paid correctly starts the job distrusting the department.

How do you work with central human resources when your department's need does not fit the standard process?

What they are checking: Whether they can work productively with central HR when a need does not fit, advocating for their department without going around the process.

About the work

The department includes the university police. What is different about hiring for a sworn role compared with an administrative one?

What they are checking: Awareness of the extended police hiring process this posting names specifically.

Walk me through monitoring employment verification and payroll compliance reports. What do you do when someone is out of compliance?

What they are checking: Whether they follow up on compliance gaps until they are closed, since unresolved verification or payroll issues create legal risk for the university.
