Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about the largest network you designed or deployed. What did you learn?

What they are checking: Whether they have real experience with large-scale HPC environments.

Tell me about a time you set a technical direction that others followed.

What they are checking: Whether they have the product leadership and vision the posting asks for.

What would you do

A training job is running slower than expected and the team blames the network. How do you prove it either way?

What they are checking: Whether they can use telemetry and testing to find the real bottleneck.

A vendor's new switch looks great on paper. How would you evaluate it before buying at scale?

What they are checking: Whether they test hardware against real workloads instead of trusting data sheets.

About the work

How would you design the network fabric for a large GPU cluster used for model training?

What they are checking: Whether they understand non-blocking topologies, rail designs and the traffic patterns of distributed training.

Compare InfiniBand and RoCE for an HPC cluster. When would you choose each?

What they are checking: Whether they know the trade-offs in performance, operations and vendor ecosystems.

How do you handle congestion in a RoCE network so training jobs do not stall?

What they are checking: Whether they understand PFC, ECN and congestion control, and their failure modes.

How would you plan network growth so a cluster can double in size without a full redesign?

What they are checking: Whether they design for scale with clear expansion paths and capacity planning.

How would you connect large on-prem data centers in different regions for HPC workloads?

What they are checking: Whether they can design high-capacity WAN links for large data movement between sites.

How do you automate deployment and configuration across thousands of network ports?

What they are checking: Whether they use automation and validation to run large fabrics reliably.
