Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a night shift where you had to cover a house-wide staffing shortage across multiple units at once. What did you do first?

whether the candidate can triage competing unit needs and prioritize under pressure without a manager present

Tell me about a time you had to step in during a Code 4 or similarly unstable patient situation as a resource, not the primary nurse. What was your role and what did you actually do?

clarity about the house supervisor's role as coordinator and clinical resource rather than hands-on caregiver

Tell me about a time a physician disagreed with your assessment of a patient situation. How did you handle it?

comfort asserting clinical judgment to physicians while keeping the relationship collaborative

Tell me about the last time you had to manage an admission, transfer, and discharge all competing for your attention at the same time. How did you decide what came first?

real-world prioritization skill specific to patient flow, which is central to this job

Tell me about a time you had to reassign staff from one unit to cover an unexpected admission elsewhere. How did you decide, and how did you handle any pushback from the staff involved?

skill in redeploying resources fairly while managing staff morale

Tell me about a decision you made overnight that you couldn't run by anyone else first. What happened and how did it turn out?

comfort operating independently, since night and per diem shifts often mean no immediate backup

Technical

Describe a medication error or patient incident you investigated. What did you do to document it and what corrective action came out of it?

familiarity with incident investigation process and follow-through on corrective action, not just reporting

Walk me through how you'd get a full patient handoff report from a sending unit, like the ED or OR, when things are moving fast and the sending nurse is also slammed.

knowledge of safe handoff practices under time pressure

How do you make sure regulatory or accreditation standards are being met on a shift when you're the only supervisor covering the whole building?

working knowledge of compliance expectations and how they get monitored in real time, not just in theory

Situational

A charge nurse pages you at 2 a.m. saying the ED needs to transfer a patient up but the receiving unit says they don't have staff. Walk me through how you handle that call.

ability to balance patient flow, staffing reality, and safety without escalating conflict

If a family member or visitor is escalating in the lobby and threatening to go to the media, what do you do in the moment, and who do you loop in?

knowledge of the escalation chain for PR and administrative issues, and composure under public pressure

You're covering the whole house overnight and you notice the same type of system problem — say, delayed lab pickups — happening on three different units. What do you do with that information?

whether the candidate thinks beyond the immediate shift to trend recognition and reporting to unit managers

If the Safety Officer and Patient Safety Officer are both unavailable and a fire alarm or hazardous condition comes up on your shift, what's your understanding of your authority and what would you actually do?

awareness of the delegated safety officer role and willingness to act decisively without hesitation
