Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Walk me through a time you were the only clinician on scene with a hospice patient in crisis. What did you see, what did you decide, and what did you do first?

whether the candidate can act independently and prioritize under pressure without waiting for backup

Describe a situation where a family wanted to pursue treatment that conflicted with the hospice plan of care, or wanted to stop something you thought should continue. How did you handle that conversation?

comfort supporting patient and family autonomy even when it creates tension with clinical recommendations

Tell me about a time you had to deliver difficult news or sit with a family in the moment of a patient's death. What did you do in the first few minutes?

emotional composure and practical know-how during an actual death, not just empathy in the abstract

What draws you to weekend and after-hours hospice work specifically, given it usually means less team presence and more solo decision-making?

whether the candidate genuinely wants the autonomy and unpredictability of this schedule rather than just needing a job

How do you manage your own emotional load after a hard death or a string of difficult visits, especially working somewhat isolated over a weekend shift?

sustainability and self-awareness to avoid burnout in a high-emotional-intensity, low-support shift

Technical

Tell me about the last time you managed a patient with terminal secretions or air hunger. What interventions did you use and how did the family respond?

hands-on competence with common end-of-life symptom management, not just textbook knowledge

What's your process for initiating a standing order or protocol in the middle of the night without a physician immediately available?

understanding of scope of practice and confidence acting on standing orders appropriately

How do you handle documentation and handoff when you're the last clinician to see a patient before the next shift starts, especially if something changed during your visit?

reliability of continuity of care and attention to documentation standards under a rotating on-call model

Situational

A caregiver calls you at 6pm on a Saturday saying their loved one is agitated, pulling at their sheets, and breathing fast. What questions do you ask, and how do you decide whether this needs a phone intervention or an in-person visit?

clinical judgment and triage skills over the phone before ever seeing the patient

You get a call from one family right as you're finishing a visit with another patient forty-five minutes away. Both sound urgent. How do you decide who you see first and what do you tell the second family while they wait?

time management and communication skills when covering a wide territory alone

Say you arrive at a home and sense something is unsafe, maybe a chaotic environment or a caregiver who seems overwhelmed or under the influence. What do you do?

safety awareness and judgment when working alone in unpredictable home settings

If you're driving between Waukesha and Washington County and get a call that a patient two counties over is declining fast, how do you triage that against your existing schedule?

practical grasp of the geographic scope of the territory and ability to plan routes and priorities in real time
