Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you caught a specimen identification error. What did you do?

What they are checking: Whether they treat sample identity as sacred, since a mix-up can send a patient the wrong result.

Tell me about a time you worked with a pathologist or coordinator to fix a slide quality issue.

What they are checking: Whether they take feedback and work as a team member rather than defending their slides.

What would you do

A pathologist sends back slides saying the staining is uneven. How do you work out the cause?

What they are checking: Methodical troubleshooting across processing, cutting and staining instead of just recutting.

You are behind on a large batch and a block keeps crumbling as you cut. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they protect precious tissue under time pressure rather than wasting it to stay fast.

The automated stainer throws an error mid-run. Walk me through what you do.

What they are checking: Calm equipment troubleshooting and knowing when to stop and escalate.

About the work

Walk me through how you section an FFPE block from the moment you pick it up to a finished H&E slide.

What they are checking: Real bench skill with the microtome, water bath and stainer, and the small steps that make a good section.

How do you decide on block orientation and knife angle to get a representative section?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that a poorly oriented section can hide the tissue the pathologist needs to see.

How do you cut a good frozen section on a cryostat, and what problems do you watch for?

What they are checking: Hands-on cryostat skill, including temperature, tissue type and chatter or folds.

How have you used a LIMS to track your work, and what happens if what you did is not recorded correctly?

What they are checking: Understanding that traceability in a LIMS is part of the job, not paperwork after it.

How do you keep up with equipment maintenance records, and why do they matter in a clinical lab?

What they are checking: Awareness that maintenance logs are needed for inspections and reliable patient results.

What safety practices do you follow with formalin, xylene and sharp blades?

What they are checking: Real habits around chemical and blade safety, which the posting stresses.
