Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a GenAI solution you built from a vague problem to something people used.

What they are checking: Whether they can do discovery, design and hands-on building end to end, as this hybrid role needs.

Tell me about a prototype that failed. What did you learn?

What they are checking: Honest reflection and learning from experiments that did not work.

What would you do

How do you uncover a high-value GenAI use case when a team just says they want to use AI?

What they are checking: Problem discovery skill that starts with real pain points, not the technology.

A health system wants an agent to write patient messages. What risks do you raise?

What they are checking: Awareness of safety, privacy and accuracy risks in patient-facing AI.

You are embedded with a team that is skeptical of AI. How do you earn their trust?

What they are checking: Ability to build relationships and show value with small wins.

About the work

What they are checking: Practical agent design, including tools, guardrails and human review in a healthcare setting.

How do you build a prototype fast enough to drive alignment without it becoming throwaway work?

What they are checking: Whether they know when to build quick and rough and when a prototype needs solid foundations to grow.

How do you evaluate whether an LLM-based solution is accurate enough for use?

What they are checking: Discipline around evaluation sets, failure cases and measurable value.

How do you measure the value a GenAI solution delivers to a business team?

What they are checking: Whether they tie work to measurable outcomes like time saved or errors reduced.

Passionate about precision medicine and advancing the healthcare industry? Recent advancements in underlying technology have finally made it possible for AI to impact clinical care in a meaningful way. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time. As a GenAI Product Builder, you’ll embed directly with Tempus teams — from health systems to life science organizations to internal operations— to help them identify real problems and solve them using agentic GenAI solutions. This is a hybrid role spanning product management, product design and hands-on implementation. You’ll help customers imagine what’s possible with GenAI, prototype it, and make it real. You will: • Partner with customer and business leaders to uncover high-impact use cases where GenAI can deliver measurable value. • Through customer research, problem discovery and systems thinking, you’ll translate vague operational challenges into clear, functional solutions • Build rapid prototypes / proof-of-concepts to validate ideas and drive alignment • Design and implement agent-based solutions — from workflow automation to patient communication, insight generation, or clinical operations • Work directly with LLMs and agent frameworks (prompt design, chaining, context management, evaluation, and guardrails) • Lead moderate-to-full implementations in collaboration with customer teams and/or internal engineers • Serve as a technical and strategic bridge to our Tempus OS and other platform teams — shaping their roadmap through real-world feedback • Train business users, power users, and internal champions on interacting with deployed agentic solutions. Key Qualifications • 2+ years of experience in a hybrid role intersecting product management / ownership and hands-on software or AI engineering • Hands-on experience building or deploying GenAI applications (agents, chat interfaces, or LLM-driven workflows) • Strong software engineering skills (using Python, JavaScript or similar) and familiarity with APIs, webhooks, integration patterns, data pipelines • Experience and proven track record applying skills in systems thinking, domain modeling, problem discovery and user research in service of a product solution • Experience designing or building prototype-to-production AI solutions (not just proof-of-concepts) — including observability, A/B testing, error-handling, scaling • Practical experience working with LLMs, agentic frameworks, prompt engineering, evaluation metrics, and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude, Codex) • Excellent communication and storytelling skills — able to interface with both clinicians and engineers • Proven ability to drive projects from discovery through delivery, balancing experimentation and execution • Strong bias for action with a background in rapid prototyping, user research, and scaling products under a robust operational model Why It Matters The GenAI Product Builder plays a critical role in our mission: turning the promise of generative AI into working, responsible, and scalable systems that make a difference in patients’ lives. CHI - $110,000 - $140,000 The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from Illinois and may vary for other locations (California, Colorado, New York). Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience.
