Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a fuel system component you designed or validated. What were the key requirements?

What they are checking: Whether they have real design and validation experience on parts like injectors, pumps or filters.

How do you work with a supplier who designs a component to your specification?

What they are checking: Whether they manage suppliers actively and know which design decisions stay with Mercury.

Tell me about a time a test you ran disproved your design idea. What did you do next?

What they are checking: Whether they follow the evidence and iterate, which the posting's hands-on environment rewards.

What would you do

An injector passes bench testing but shows flow drift in field engines after one season. How do you investigate?

What they are checking: Whether they consider deposits, fuel quality and storage conditions and set up a structured root cause investigation.

You're asked to cut cost on a fuel filter without changing its performance. Where do you look?

What they are checking: Whether they can find savings while protecting filtration and durability, which affect engine life.

How do you decide when a design is ready to release, even if you'd like more test data?

What they are checking: Whether they can weigh risk against schedule and explain the decision clearly to the program team.

About the work

What makes a marine fuel system harder to design for than an automotive one?

What they are checking: Whether they understand marine challenges like ethanol fuels, water intrusion, vapor, corrosion and long storage periods.

How would you define the critical characteristics for a new fuel injector, and how would you validate them?

What they are checking: Whether they can turn system needs into measurable specs and a sound test plan for a component.

What failure modes would you put at the top of a DFMEA for a high-pressure fuel pump?

What they are checking: Whether they know where pumps really fail and can use DFMEA as a working tool, not paperwork.

What fuel system safety and emissions requirements have you designed to?

What they are checking: Whether they know the regulations and standards that shape marine fuel system hardware design.
