Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a time you were the only technical person on site and had to solve a problem with little support.

What they are checking: Whether they can work independently and stay calm, which a remote field role depends on.

How do you prepare before you travel to a job, so you are not stuck on site without what you need?

What they are checking: Whether they plan the preparatory work, like parts, drawings and site safety needs, which saves the customer time and money.

Tell me about a time you had to explain a technical problem to a plant manager who was not technical.

What they are checking: Whether they can make a fault and its fix clear to the person paying for downtime.

How comfortable are you with overtime and changing schedules when a customer has an emergency?

What they are checking: Whether they understand that hourly field service means irregular hours when a plant is down.

What would you do

You finish a repair, but the customer wants you to stay and look at unrelated equipment that is not on the order. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they help the customer while looping in their manager so the extra work is approved and billed correctly.

How do you decide when a problem needs to be escalated to engineering instead of solved on site?

What they are checking: Whether they know the limits of their knowledge and escalate early enough to protect the customer.

About the work

Walk me through how you commission a variable frequency drive on a new motor installation.

What they are checking: Whether they know the core VFD start-up steps, like motor data entry, ID run and parameter checks, in a sensible order.

A drive keeps tripping on overcurrent at a customer site. How do you troubleshoot it?

What they are checking: Whether they work through motor, cabling, load and parameters logically instead of swapping parts and hoping.

What preventive maintenance would you do on a VFD that has been running for several years?

What they are checking: Whether they know what wears out in drives, such as fans, capacitors and connections, and how to catch it early.

What lockout and electrical safety steps do you take before opening a drive cabinet?

What they are checking: Whether they know drives hold stored energy in DC bus capacitors and will verify zero energy before touching anything.
