Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Tell me about a capital project, like a renovation or infrastructure upgrade, that you led. How did you keep it on budget and schedule?

What they are checking: Project control experience with contractors, change orders and keeping operations running during work.

Tell me about an emergency at a facility, like a power failure, flood or fire alarm. What did you do?

What they are checking: Calm emergency response and whether they had plans in place before the event.

What energy management or sustainability project have you led, and what did it save?

What they are checking: Whether they can deliver measurable energy savings rather than speak in general terms about sustainability.

How do you help the Facilities Director build a multi-year budget and roadmap?

What they are checking: Whether they can think beyond daily operations and contribute to long-range planning.

What would you do

You will manage several sites. How do you bring standard programs and procedures to buildings that each do things their own way?

What they are checking: Ability to drive standardization across sites while respecting real local differences.

Your HVAC system at one site keeps failing and the director asks whether to repair or replace. How do you build the recommendation?

What they are checking: Lifecycle cost thinking and the ability to support capital planning with clear numbers.

How do you prioritize when three sites each have urgent requests on the same day?

What they are checking: Triage based on safety, business impact and uptime rather than whoever calls first.

About the work

Walk me through how you build and run a preventive maintenance program and how you know it is working.

What they are checking: Real command of PM scheduling, completion tracking and whether PMs reduce reactive work orders.

Which KPIs would you report monthly, like cost per square foot or work order completion, and what would make you worried?

What they are checking: Whether they use metrics to manage the operation rather than just collecting them for reports.

How do you stay in compliance with OSHA, NFPA and your local AHJ across multiple sites?

What they are checking: Practical knowledge of life-safety inspections, fire protection and documentation that holds up in an audit.

How do you run an RFP and choose a facilities vendor, and how do you manage one who is slipping?

What they are checking: Vendor management skill, including holding vendors to service levels with contracts and data.
