Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

About your past

Walk me through your energy trading track record and the products you trade, such as crude, products or natural gas.

What they are checking: Whether their two-plus years of profitability is real and tied to specific markets they know deeply.

Tell me about a geopolitical shock that moved energy prices sharply while you held a position. What did you do?

What they are checking: How they act under sudden headline risk, and whether they protected capital.

Tell me about a time you helped another trader or desk with an idea or information.

What they are checking: Whether they will collaborate in a flat firm where traders share ideas across desks.

What would you do

Your strategy depends on a spread that suddenly widens beyond anything you have seen. What do you do?

What they are checking: Whether they respect risk limits when history stops being a reliable guide.

What would you need from our technology to trade across global energy markets here?

What they are checking: Whether they have practical needs in mind and understand how tools support their edge.

About the work

What fundamental data do you watch most closely, and how does it turn into a trade?

What they are checking: Whether they connect inventories, supply and demand data to actual positions rather than talk in generalities.

How do you trade calendar spreads, and what drives the shape of the curve?

What they are checking: Whether they understand contango, backwardation and storage economics, which are core to energy markets.

How do you manage risk around the weekly EIA inventory report or an OPEC meeting?

What they are checking: Whether they plan for scheduled event risk instead of being caught by it.

How do contract expiry and delivery mechanics affect the way you hold futures positions?

What they are checking: Whether they understand physical delivery and roll risk, which can surprise traders who ignore it.

How do you know when your edge has faded?

What they are checking: Whether they monitor their own results honestly and adapt rather than wait out a broken strategy.
