Likely interview questions for this role

Written from this job description, not a generic list. Each one notes what the interviewer is really checking.

Behavioral

Tell me about a time you were running a book and the market moved sharply against your position. What did you do in the moment?

composure and risk discipline under real P&L pressure, not hypothetical bravado

Describe a time you disagreed with a technologist or quant about how a pricing model should handle a specific risk factor. How did you resolve it?

ability to collaborate productively with non-traders and hold a technical position without being dismissive or capitulating

Tell me about a losing streak or a period where your edge seemed to disappear. How did you figure out what was actually going wrong?

self-diagnostic rigor and honesty about failure versus blaming the market

Describe a situation where you had to push back on a firm's existing model or process because you thought it was mispricing risk.

initiative and willingness to challenge established systems, relevant given the emphasis on engineering trading systems together

Technical

Walk me through how you'd price an option on a commodity with a seasonal supply pattern, like natural gas heading into winter.

whether the candidate understands how fundamentals and time-varying volatility feed into a pricing model, not just textbook Black-Scholes

What commodity options products have you traded, and how did the risk profile differ from equity index or rates options you've worked with?

whether their stated commodities experience is genuine and specific rather than adjacent experience being stretched to fit

How do you think about skew and term structure differently across commodities versus equity index options?

depth of quantitative understanding specific to commodities rather than generic options theory

Walk me through how you size a position and set risk limits when volatility in a commodity spikes suddenly, say around an OPEC announcement or a weather event.

practical risk management instincts under event-driven volatility, a defining feature of commodities trading

How do you stay on top of the fundamental news flow for the commodities you trade, and how does that translate into an actual trading decision?

whether they have a real information edge and workflow versus a superficial awareness of headlines

Situational

Say you're market-making options on crude oil and you notice your implied volatility surface is out of line with where a correlated product, like heating oil, is trading. What's your process for figuring out whether that's an opportunity or a trap?

how the candidate reasons about relative value and avoids blindly trusting a model without questioning inputs

If you were given ownership of a new commodity options product Belvedere wanted to start making markets in, how would you approach building out the strategy from scratch?

whether they can operate with ownership and structure an ambiguous problem, since the role explicitly asks for strategy leadership

Imagine two correlated commodity options desks internally have conflicting views on where volatility should be. How would you handle that disagreement if you had to make a market right now?

decision-making speed and how they balance collaboration against the need to act independently in real time
